RuffleButts Selects Centric PLM™ as Product Development Base
Based in a suburb of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, RuffleButts was founded 15 years ago starting with ruffled bloomers for baby girls, hence the name. The company creates cheerful clothes for the precious years of childhood. RuggedButts for boys was added later, providing a complete wardrobe for girls and boys through teenage years.
Audrie Garcia, Head of Production and Design at RuffleButts, says, “We’re growing a bit and adding new product categories, new sizes, and it was getting to be a lot to deal with.” She talks about manual labor and duplicate data entry in a typical product development cycle, adding, “We have hundreds of Google sheets for specs alone. Then we have different sheets for our color library, and a SKU creation document on another sheet.”
There were also many steps on the creative side. Designers had to copy and paste their designs from Adobe™ Illustrator onto a digital project board during the design phase. When the project moves to development or production, the design is reintroduced to another sheet where technical packages are created and ultimately sent to the factory, often via email. Garcia says, “We enter data in multiple places. And things get lost or missing, or someone changes the size of one document but forgets to change it in another… We want to streamline the whole process. .”
On top of all this, being in the children’s clothing category puts the company under strict regulations to comply with government safety standards. Garcia says, “There are so many rules, for example, no lead in thread, zippers, buttons and obviously, flammability. We save this information on our internal shared drive, but you cannot access it outside of the office. And it is not currently linked to any product. I may know that we have a test document for certain products and where to go to find it, but there is no easy way for anyone other than me to know that this product has been tested.”
RuffleButts chose PLM as a strategy and evaluated a few vendors. Much research and several demonstrations took place over the course of a year. According to Garcia, one of the most important features is “scalability, because our current growth rate is phenomenal. I wanted to make sure that the company we chose could grow with us. may want to bring in more users like marketing, our e-commerce team, or our buyers and planners. During the demos, I finally noticed that Centric was one of the only companies I saw that allowed this without going through a lot of jumping hoops.”
Garcia expects to gain considerable time once they are fully operational. She says, “I did the math some time ago. Overall, we’ll save about a week and a half of work per season just on the product engineering or data insight side. On the design side, the Adobe Connect plugin is awesome. to link Adobe Illustrator directly to Centric PLM; designers won’t have to leave Illustrator, eliminating many of their repetitive tasks. It will also make it easier to manage the calendar and the status of the samples: looking at the Centric home screen, I could have a widget on my dashboard that shows me the status at a glance.”
Chris GrovesPresident and CEO of Centric said, “We are thrilled to partner with RuffleButts, a rapidly growing new apparel company. They offer fun and functional clothing for families, and we are delighted to have been chosen as their partner. “
